I'm inspired!

I know I just posted yesterday, but I just wanted to write a quick note. Did anyone see today's episode of Oprah on breast cancer? I was so impressed by Nancy Brinker who created the Susan G. Komen foundation in honor of her sister who died of breast cancer. For those who don't know Susan died in 1980 at the age of 36. This happened before the time of the pink ribbons and helplines. None of that existed before Nancy. She was diagnosed herself 4 years after her sister passed away. I can't imagine how scary that must of been, and all I kept thinking about was how the efforts of this one woman has changed the face of breast cancer. She said her sister passed away about 30 years ago and yet it still hurts everyday. Despite this, she has made such a difference, she has given women with breast cancer and their families somewhere to turn. There have been times when I wish that my mom had breast cancer instead of uterine cancer because of the huge support network connected with that type of cancer. I know that might seem like an odd thing to say, but uterine cancer is so rare, especially the type my mom had. I feel like my mom and our family really had no where to turn for answers. Maybe someday I will be able to help change that for other woman with uterine cancer and their families'...

Watch this episode of Oprah and I guarantee you will be inspired too!

I missed this, but I know that Oprah does a lot during October for Breast Cancer Awareness. I am so sorry that you felt so alone when u needed support the most...I don't have much advice on that, except for the fact that my one aunt (who is a 30-year survivor of breast, uterine, and colon cancers) has become an advocate for those who don't know where to go and what to do.Unfortunately due to HIPPA it is hard for people to get in touch with her, as she can't contact them...It is so sad that there isn't much advocacy for others...I'm starting to think you can do something about this, Miss Jamie!!!!

Great post, Jamie. It's hard to imagine a time when Breast Cancer wasn't as heavily publicized, but maybe one day Oprah will be interviewing you about how you had a crazy little idea to sell your crocheted goods to raise money and awareness for uterine cancer. : )

Be proud that you are working towards helping others!

OMG Jamie,
I saw Oprah and you are right...it was amazing how Nancy started the Suan G Komen foundation for her sister, Suzy.
I think it would be so wonderful to start something in your mom's name. Even if it was small and local, I think it could really be eye-opening for so many, even me.
I have ideas...let's chat! Go for it!
